Walthamstow Pennant FC

Walthamstow Pennant 4 Croydon Athletic 0 - Spartan League, Premier Division

Walthamstow is a large suburban district of (north) east London, England, situated 7.5 miles (12.1 km) northeast of Charing Cross and has formed part of Greater London since 1965. Walthamstow is bordered to the north by Chingford, south by Leyton and Leytonstone, east by the southern reaches of Epping Forest at Woodford and west by Tottenham and the River Lea valley. Leyton High Road, Hoe Street, Chingford Road, Chingford Mount (passing south-north through Walthamstow and its neighbouring towns) form part of an ancient route from London to Waltham Abbey. The High Street is dominated by Walthamstow Market, which began in 1885, and occupies all but the last 100 metres of the street. It is reputed to be a mile long, but in fact measures approximately one kilometre. It is the longest street market in Europe. The market is open five days a week (not Sunday or Monday), and there is currently a Sunday farmers' market. Adam Woodyatt is an English actor who plays Ian Beale in the soap EastEnders who was born in Walthamstow in 1968.

Pennant Football Club was formed as a junior side in 1964, initially joining the South West Essex League. The league's Premier Division title was won by Pennant in 1972–73. Two seasons later the club joined the Metropolitan League, winning the league at the first attempt. Pennant joined the London Spartan League in 1983, becoming a senior club. They finished 4th in the Senior in their first season, which was sufficient to gain promotion to the Premier Division. In 1988 neighbours Walthamstow Avenue were swallowed up by Redbridge Forest, so Pennant changed their name to Walthamstow Pennant in order to keep the footballing name of Walthamstow alive. The 1988–89 season saw the renamed club win the Spartan League Cup and the installation of floodlights at Wadham Lodge. This Pieman travelled by Victoria Line to Walthamstow Central and then by bus to the Crooked Billet to reach Wadham Lodge. The dominant home side defeated visitors Croydon Athletic 4-0 in this Spartan League encounter.
