Cornard United FC

Cornard United 5 Downham Town 1 - Eastern Counties League, Division One

FA Cup 5th Round Saturday and another opportunity to visit a new ground. Great Cornard is a village adjacent to the more well known Suffolk town of Sudbury. I would estimate that the Blackhouse Lane ground would take about half an hour to walk to from Sudbury station (One Railway, branch line from Marks Tey). This is a very rural location with open fields surrounding the ground on three sides. Clubs at this level often make good use of conifers to provide a border to the ground and Cornard have done so to great effect. There is also a decent seated stand opposite the clubhouse straddling the half way line and I would estimate this accommodates 150 spectators.

Both Cornard and visitors Downham Town are in the lower part of the Eastern Counties League Division One table and despite a promising start from Downham they were soon 3 goals down. A further strike before the break meant an uphill task if they were going to get anything from this match. A goal per side in the second period contributed to a decent match and once again I would endorse both the standard and the organisation of this league and member clubs.

Cornard is easily accessible via road and our journey via the A10 and A120 also took in Braintree and Halstead. Home in time for the 2nd half of Newcastle v Southampton on TV.
